Depends on what kind of music you want to play. If you want a good rough distorted sound, you really need a good solid guitar with two humbuckers, something like a les paul. On the other hand, if you like more blues stuff and need a nice clean sound, maybe look for a telecaster or another strat. I personally don't really like takamine acoustics, although I know a lot of people do. To me what kind of acoustic guitar you buy pretty much just depends on how much money you have. For under $500, you can get a low end Martin which will be better than most other guitars for that price, In my opinion. I have an alvarez that I really like, but I didn't pay for it, and I'm really not sure how much they cost.

When buying any guitar, electric or acoustic, the best advise I can give is to sit down and play it for a pretty good length of time. Don't get too hung up on names, brands, or even price. Every guitar plays different, sounds different, feels different. It is all about individual preference. If you hand 10 guitar players the same guitar, it will sound different with each player. They all fret differently, pluck the strings differently, use different guage picks, hold the picks at different angles.
You are the only person that knows what sound you like, and what neck feels good. Know one can tell you that.
As far as price, I have owned high end guitars that I hated, and cheap no-name guitars that I loved. I currently own a Martin acoustic and an Alvarez acoustic, and just got rid of a PRS electric that I paid $1,200 for used, and didn't like.
Play before you pay.

For accoustic, I always like Ovation. I have a Takamine and an Ovation now. The Ovation just sounds.....cleaner to me.
For electric, for the money you have to spend, you're probably better off to stick with the name...Gibson or Fender.
Just go to a music or guitar store and ask one of the clerks. They're there because they know what they are talking about. You can sit down and play each guitar before you buy it. The ones I've been to are very helpful. Good Luck.

For an acoustic, get a Yamaha. Should be about 400-500$, but definitely worth it. I prefer mine over all my other guitars. As for electric, with that money you could get an ibanez, but I would definitely reccomend an epiphone.

I would go to Musician's Friend, and then go to BizRate and compare prices, then go back to Musician's Friend and tell them where and how low the price was elsewhere. They will lower it down just for you for about 14 days.
