Lenin had a stroke in 1922, and while he was recovering Stalin, Kamenev and Zinoviev formed a triumviate and used their power to annex other non-Russian countries to the Siviet Union. When Lenin finally regained his health he was sharply critical of the triumvirate, especially Stalin, for this move, claiming that Stalin is crude in his methods and dictatorial. Lenin recommended that the Central Committee remove Stalin from power, but this was not acted on.

On a personal level it was Stalin's rudeness to Krupskaya, Lenin's wife and longterm comrade. On a political level it was Stalin's accumulation of bureacratic power which Lenin thought was dangerous. See Lenin's Last will and Testament which was suppressed by the Stalinists until Krushkev's secret speech to the Party Congress in 1956.
