I understand that this is highlyg variable depending on type of job, whether the individual was previously unemployed, the cost of creating the job etc etc, but I am just looking for a rounded figure which can be used in modelling, and which could be substituted for another number (one more contextually correct) should the need arise.

Beveridge would be proud - his report was the cornerstone of postwar British social policy - and one of his main assumptions was that there was a dual strain on the economy - that full employment was desireable for that reason - it was not just that you were paying out benefits but were losing tax revenue as well.

This government however hasn't done much apart from move the unemployed from the unemployment statistics to the sickness ones - five million economically inactive people but hey you can always tax and spend instead!
