Started off with a peach bucket and a soccer ball with no hole cut out in the bucket so to get the ball out someone had to climb a ladder

there were also only select people who could shoot (since changed) and you couldn't dribble the ball

The game has developed into a basket with a rim and it's own designed basketball and dribbling is allowed with 1 hand at a time.

The game originally added a backboard to the basket to keep nearby sitting fans from knocking out shots with their umbrellas as seats where close to the court

The backboard has stuck ever since and is used as an advantage to make baskets today

Originally you weren't able to dunk the basketball but that has been allowed and the hoops have been made stronger and stronger to endure such punishment

Goaltending was made a rule to keep dominant big men from knocking down every shot

the 3 second rule in the lane was added to encourage quick moves and not slowly backing down your opponent

Half court violation was added and has since moved from 10 seconds to 8 seconds

the 3 point line was added as well as a 24 second clock to increase scoring and avoid boring stalling tactics

the game has also changed from being dominated by guards to the development of centers and then the importance of a big man was recognized
