Yes they should! Studies have shown that people that abuse their animals are more likely to be child abuser's or wife/husband abusers! The law is way to lenient there was a lady that lived across the street from a friend of mine and she was charged with animal cruelty (she left her cat and kittens and a puppy alone in her trailer for over 2 weeks and were in Florida it was the middle of summer - while she was on a drug binge! All the animals died!) she wasn't allowed to own animals anymore but guess what she had a new dog about a month later. Animal control was notified and did nothing! There needs to be jail time!

In a lot of cases yes, where it is deliberate cruelty. As has been said, why have an animal if you're going to be cruel to it. And it's only a small step from mistreating an animal to mistreating a person. I also think more controls should exist over people who breed animals and sell the babies. Anybody who wants to sell a baby animal, even if it's only a hamster or an insect, should have to register with a body like the RSPCA and should be subject to unannounced inspection. Unfortunately this would be extremely difficult and expensive to administer.

They definitely should. Ron Artest, of the Sacramento Kings, just had his Great Dane taken away for starvation and neglect. This guy makes millions and he can't even hire someone to make sure they are well cared for. The story I read said the Animal Control have been to his house numerous time since July '06 and his dogs have spent a total of 77 nights at the pound since then.
His excuse..."I love dogs and think they should be able to live (as) freely as possible."
Sounds like a chronic problem, torturing his animals.

I think those who intentionally mistreat an animal and physically abuse them should get much tougher sentencing than they do.
I'd make each and everyone of them work in animal shelters and make them watch as the vets treat the sick and injured.
I'd also make the stupid owners who treat animals like toys, wear the silly outfits that they put on their dogs, and I'd make anyone who de-clawed a cat have their nails pulled out!

I believe that if someone has the capacity to inflict pain and cruelty on an animal then they have the capacity to do the same to a fellow human being. I think punishment of these Offenders should be tougher and they also be made to take some form of therapy in order to address their pathological tendencies.

Why not place the guilty person into a pit with a dozen starved Doberman, Rottweiler and Bull terriers?
Not as puishment, but merely to demonstrate to the individual the effects of starving an innocent animal!!

Tougher then they are getting now I expect you mean. I am happy to say that they don't seem to get off lightly now. In UK we are a Nation of animal lovers and it is often those with very low IQs that don't care for them properly

Yes. The link between the abuse of domestic animals and the abuse of children has been made. It is about self esteem and power.

Yes. The penalties should be on par with the offense. Even animals deserve respect and care. I think people who dress their animals up should also be penalized by making them wear the same outfits. How stupid.
