There have been many...many way too many

Several test pilots (the original job of what we now know as astronauts) The Apollo one crew, ( I have seen the capsule at the Smithsonian) The Challenger (saw the after effects of explosion hanging over KSC from Ft Lauderdale) The Columbia crew. There is a beautiful most beautiful monument to all of these people at KSC in Florida. Facing the sky over an open field with a mirrored surface to reflect the clouds and other sky features. It lists these names "among the clouds"

To the Shuttle crews:
A worldwide effort to build a spot, in space, an area to work

We shuttled supplies and people there, so smooth, no effort or quirk

On each flight seven who went along, each a specialist in their task

Those seven heroes bold and strong, in the job that they were asked.

Each new the possibility of their fate, that something may go wrong.

Yet they went without a fear, their days hard and long.

One day seven didn’t make it, they left us too early we know,

The Challenger crew is loved and missed, their families still tell us so.

As years went by, more flights left, this haven that we call home

Each time seven heroes went along, amid the stars to roam.

STS-107 on its homeward way, Flew beyond the stars above,

And with her went seven unsung heroes, just doing what they all loved.

To Columbia and Challenger we raise a toast, to heroes deep in our hearts

For their families we pray coast to coast, In this love we will never part.

On January 27, 1967, during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle, a flash fire in the Apollo module killed astronauts Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, Lt. Col. Edward H. White, and Roger B. Chaffee.

Technically speaking Christa McAuliffe wasn't an astronaut -- she never made it out of the atmosphere. RIP
