The Great Wall (called "Chang Cheng" meaning "long wall" in Chinese) was actually four main walls that were never fully connected. The first segment was built beginning in about 450 BC and was expanded quite a lot in a period of a hundred years or so during the Qin dynasty (around 250 BC). The biggest parts of the walls were built during the Ming dynasty (14th century). Even today, large sections are being rebuilt to make them accessible to tourists who arrive on major highways in buses. That's why those popular sections close to Beijing don't look very old. They are actually rebuilt.

The wall was in what we would call eastern China because China was half as big before the 13th century as it is today. The western-most section ends in the gobi of Gansu Province, north of Lanzhou. That used to be the western border of China. The wall was never extended farther west when China grabbed much of central Asia in Mao's time. China's huge army will be enough to prevent any separatist uprising from the Tibetans or Uyghurs.
