To me, it is a place in a person's mind or a location that causes a person extreme discomfort. Some people may say that to them, it is a job, a relationship, a place, or a state of mind that makes them feel that they are being punished for.

Hell is a paradox. It is rumored to be the place of ultimate evil, darkness, and suffering. But that's impossible. If it were the place of ultimate evil, darkness, and suffering, an inhabitant would need to have memory of some sort. If one has nothing to compare their present situation to, then they can't feel bad. If someone is pricked by a needle, it disrupts their skin's state of togetherness. The disruption aggravates the person, causing pain. But without a recollection of that initial state of togetherness, the pain is the norm and, hence, the comfort. A memory of the togetherness will make the pain noticeable.
However, having a memory also brings thoughts of a previous time period, when things were better. This hope is good. So the "hell" of ultimate suffering, of "unquenchable fire" (Mk. 9:43-48) still contains hope. And with hope comes a place that cannot be full of only suffering.
Without memory, Hell is a place where one is unaware of their surroundings and is unable to recognize any discomfort, as they will have nothing to compare their present state to. With memory, Hell is a place that contains hope, the existence of which destroys the concept of eternal suffering. Hell: the paradox.

Hell is here, at least for many people. Do we really need eternal damnation in some pit of fire? Have you seen, read or heard of how people suffer and have suffered in their lives on this planet? It amazes me that certain religions find such a need to create this horrible location that we will be punished at. All they need to do is travel a bit, read a bit, open their eyes a bit and see that there is plenty of horrible "punishment" right here. Maybe that is the "hell" that we have to live through. I guess this would require reincarnation. You f up in a decent life, you come back as some poor suffering bastard in some earthly hellhole (and there are plenty of those).

To me, H*ll is the complete absence of hope.

As living beings (and arguably as souls), we strive to certain goals and attaining those achievments are what make us who we are. Without hope that we can achieve those goals, we would be living in hell.

After death, some believe that we go to a better place. Some believe that some don't. The existence of that realm, as it were, would be a place where there were no hope of hope.

Hell is what we create for ourselves when we do not love and respect ourselves and others.

It is failing to recognize the innate oneness of all of creation.
