If you have a fireplace accessory store in your area, they sell a brick cleaner that is especially designed to remove soot and ash. During the fire burning season, some home improvement stores sell it on the seasonal aisle by the fire place equipment. It is easy to use, you simply spray it on the brick surface, agitate with a brush, wipe off the loosened soot and allow to dry. If there are particularly heavy stains, like in the fire box from repeated charred logs brushing against the bricks, use a wire brush or you will be reapplying several times.

Ordinary Oven Cleaner, even the cheap kind from DollarStores at $1 a can will clean soot off brick. Just spray it and wait 10 minutes and wipe it off with a rag, not a paper towel. Repeat couple times its GONE.

remove the screen, andirons, and grate and sweep up all the ashes.

use a wire bristled brush for the first "attack" of the bricks. this helps break down creosote.

then use 1/4 cup of washing soda (grocery detergent/ laundry aisle) in 1 gallon of water. apply with a sponge. brush with a stiff fiber brush and rinse with clear water. don't forget your rubber gloves of course.

to brighten soot stained brick
mix 20 oz of cola (Pepsi or coke), 1/2 cup of household cleaner (like **** and span), and 1 gallon of water in a bucket. sponge the solution onto the brick and let sit for 15 minutes. scrub with stiff bristled fiber brush and rinse with clean sponge and water. to make the solution more powerful add more cola (the acids add cleaning "muscle").
