I have two home computers using dialup and work independently Not networked). They both have Windows XP and are in seperate rooms (one wall away). One computer hardly ever gets disconnected. The other newer computer frequently gets disconnected. Here is another mystery. When the problem computer disconnects the icon in the task bar stays there as if it were still connected. Remember, one computer hardly ever gets disconnected while the other one does all the time. Thanks.

Modem weakness in the problem computer? I have the *exact* same setup as you, not-so-bad, but *very* mildly similar symptoms. One laptop is an older IBM A41, connecting in the library: takes, like, *forever* to connect (several re-dial attempts, each time), then often fails to disconnect properly (x-out of browser, right-click connection element in tray to disconnect, get system refusal...). Other laptop is an HP in the living room: almost always get a connection on the first or second attempt; a bit higher speed each time; easy and quick and reliable disconnect.

There are 2 opportunities right here: Hardware and software. One pc may have a telephone wire that your cat chewed on, for example, or that insects chewed on even if it really is in the back of the wall. you also may have a foul high quality, or unreliable, modem in a unmarried pc, or one which is not totally insterted into the PCI slot, it quite is, loose. the different chance is software topics. you may have one modem improperly configured, the incorrect driver, and/or the most probably state of affairs is that you're contaminated with malware on one pc. A hacker ought to truly have distant administration over your pc and disconnect your purposesly, at his or her discretion that's named a denial of service attack.
