Simply put, its the device that connects to the phone line (or cable) that connects your computer with others. Without a modem your computer is isolated from all the others, theyre in part what makes the internet happen, without a modem we couldn't be communicating now. Technically it stands for modulate/demodulate.
PS: they're not in any sense 'the brain of your computer'

It turns the digital info in your computer into sounds (modulate) so it can travel over the phone line. It also takes the info sent from oter computers and turns it back into digital so your computer can understand it.
MODEM= MOdulate-DEModulate
Since many people are switching to digital highspeed connections, modems are not very populay as they were a few years ago.
You should also know that a lot of people and companies MISTAKENLY call their DSL or CABLE box a modem. It seems to have the same function in terms of going between your computer and the line, but since the data is already digital, it's not a true modem.

A modem (from modulate and demodulate) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data.
Modems can be used over any means of transmitting analog signals, from driven diodes to radio. Experiments have even been performed in the use of modems over the medium of two cans connected by a string.
The most familiar example is a voiceband modem that turns the digital '1s and 0s' of a personal computer into sounds that can be transmitted over the telephone lines of Plain Old Telephone Systems (POTS), and once received on the other side, converts those sounds back into 1s and 0s.
Modems are generally classified by the amount of data they can send in a given time, normally measured in bits per second, or "bps".
Faster modems are used by Internet users every day, notably cable modems and ADSL modems. In telecommunications, "radio modems" transmit repeating frames of data at very high data rates over microwave radio links.
Some microwave modems transmit more than a hundred million bits per second. Optical modems transmit data over optical fibers.
Most intercontinental data links now use optical modems transmitting over undersea optical fibers. Optical modems routinely have data rates in excess of a billion (1x109) bits per second.

It's nothing to do with your computers "brain" (that would be the processor and memory). A modem is a MOdulator DEModutlator and is for the transmission of information to and from your PC.

Stands for modulator/demodulator. Turns the analog signal of a phone line into a digital signal for the computer to understand, then turns the computers digital signal into an analog signal to send out through the phone line to a source. It's used for dial up internet service.

A device that takes the binary 1s and 0s that your computer wants to send and changes them into audio tones that can be transmitted over phone lines. It also listens to audio tones from another MODEM and converts them to 1s and 0s that the computer can understand.
MODEM is short for modulator-demodulator.
