Before my time, but I read in a Bathroom Reader that there was once a rumor that Paul McCartney died. Some fans believed that on the Srt. Pepper album, there were hints that Paul McCartney had died and they had replaced him with a body double so that fans wouldn't know. Some hints on the album were when it was played backwards there was a comment made to the effect of the death, as well, on the album cover it looked like Paul was being impaled with something from the other side of the cover.
It is still unknown whether this rumor was unintentional or whether it was created by the Beatles themselves to try to increase record sales. Either way, the Srt. Pepper album sold even better after this rumor was spread.
