Hindustan

The primary and the most popular usage of the term Hindustan in both Hindi as well as its variant Urdu refers to the modern Republic of India.

The Republic of India has three principal short names, in both official and popular English usage, each of which is historically and culturally significant. All three originally designated a single entity comprising all the modern nations of the Indian subcontinent. These names are India, Bharat and Hindustan. The first Article of the Constitution of India states that "India, that is Bharat, shall be a union of states." Thus, India and Bharat are equally official short names for the Republic of India, while Hindustan is considered antiquated and is mostly used in historical contexts (especially British India).

The name India /'ɪndiə/ is derived from Indus, which is derived from the Old Persian word Hindu, from Sanskrit Sindhu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River.[2] The Constitution of India and common usage in Hindi also recognise Bharat (/bʰɑːrət̪/ (help·info)) as an official name of equal status. A third name, هندوستان, Hindustan (/hin̪d̪ust̪ɑːn/ (info)) (Persian: Land of the Hindus), has been in use since the 12th century, though its contemporary use is unevenly applied.

The first name of India was Jambudweepa, the land of the jambu tree. This was the first recorded name. The next name was Bharat after the king Bharata. The greeks called it Inde after the Indus river. When the aryans came the called northern India aryavrata or aryavarta and southern India dravidadesham.During the freedom struggle we called it hindusthan, literally meaning the place of origin of hinduism and not the land of hindus. Then towards the end we named it india.

JAMBU DEEP-named after the jambu tree which was abundant in India during ancient times.(don't ask me what sort of a tree that is?)
During the times of the Greek India was known by the name-INDE-meaning land beyond the river Indus.
The word Hindu is a corrupted Persian version of the original Greek word-Indus.However the word Hindu came to be used in ancient Persia to refer to the people who inhabited the land beyond the Indus river.
Persians coined the term Hindustan meaning land of the Hindus.
When the modern Europeans started coming into contact with India, they adopted the ancient Greek name-INDE and changed it to India.

The first people reached India about 40,000 BC. We have no way of knowing what they called India, since they could not write.

They probably called it "home".
