Connecting your computer to your laptop has nothing to do with it. What you need is a wireless router. This is a small box with antennas sticking out of it that you can buy for about $50 at any computer store. It serves as a sort of relay station that sorts through data from the computers in your home and the internet and sends everything where it needs to go. This will allows your laptop to connect to the 'net via wireless, and allow your computer to connect via a hardwire.

Either of two ways. You can get a router with wireless and wired ports; a typical one of these with four wired ports plus a port to attach to the broadband modem can be had for US$40-60. (The desktop machine would connect via ethernet to the router, rather than directly to the modem.) Or, you can put a wireless card in the desktop machine, and have it be an intermediary between the laptop and the network. The operating system will support either arrangement.

Alternatively, if you had two Ethernet cards, you could plug the laptop in to the desktop...not wireless, but it could work. Also, you could use bluetooth for some things, but the router really is the way to go.
