The United Kingdom is a term used to describe the collective union of Great Britain (Scotland, England, Wales) and Northern Ireland. If you take Northern Ireland out, you're left with Great Britain. That's the distinction.
As for the term 'Great' this refers to the geographical coverage, rather than some sort of self-lauding compliment.
By the way, I think I haven't answered your question properly, but this is because the question was very poorly worded.

As your country is called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, it seems perfectly sensible to me to abbreviate the title to "the United Kingdom" or "the UK" and this is what has been done for decades.

You seem to object to being called "united". There are many who would object to your being called "great". I'd quit while I was ahead if I were you.

Well, we are officially known as the United Kindon of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But that's a bit of a mouthful so it's abreviated to UK.

Hopefully never. The name is no more than a mid-eighteenth century invention aimed at conning the Scots and Welsh in to believing they are in fact in *partnership* with England as opposed to the reality of being *subject* nations.

It was only called Great (in the sense of big) Britain, as opposed to Little Britain (Brittany) the other side of the Channel.
And, originally, in French!!!

Why not just Britain ? Calling ourselves Great sounds a bit arrogant.

We are not great anymore - our empire has disappeared and devolution has made the country a fractured mess.
