It depends on what you mean by 'affirmative action'
This term came from the 1960's during the huge growth in the Federal Government. It's purpose was to advertise job openings and opportunities in non-traditional media geared towards blacks.
This was a fair and just policy opening up more opportunity for blacks.
However, the term has been bastardized into a racist policy of quotas and discrimination.
The definition of racism (check your dictionary) is
1: a belief that one race is superior of inferior to another
2: an institutionalized policy based on race
Since modern-day 'affirmative action' fits into definition #2,
we can say that 'affirmative action' is racist.
Is there 'good' racism?
No matter what good intentions you have, racism is un-American,
anti-Constitutional, and a detriment to society.
Here's one example. Answer honestly...
Your 4 year old son needs eye surgery.
Do you want the BEST eye surgeon you can find, or the one with the 'right' skin color.

Affirmative action should be abolished. This country is founded on the idea of being rewarded based on effort and ability. By giving special privledges to a certain class of people you are forcing employers to not necessarily hire the best candidate for the job.
And to the racism still exists crowd. It always will. No one forces anybody to work for a certain company or in a certain job. There are already laws prohibiting use of race, gender or religion in hiring or promoting workers. Affirmative action does nothing to fix racist practices, it is just an example of politicians pandering to a certain class of people.

yes, abolished.. because I think we have come to the point where progress can only be made by taking the next step, rather than riding the plans of the past.. in other words for equality and progression to occur we need to start acting like it can occur and do what is needed... affirmative action was great for it's time.. it forced people to work with people they never would have.. but the world has become desegregated ENOUGH that we can be free of it now, and allow people to be hired on merit as was intended from the beginning anyway.

Yes and No...
I think that it should be removed from government requirements for any safety related position eg. Police, Fire etc. Those should be BEST person for the job, period.
I think there should be limitations to the qualifications of a candidate who benefits from EEOC. The "affirmative action" candidate should be at least in the ballpark of intelligence to other candidates. I have seen some real IDIOTS get hired strictly due to gender or race requirements, and it makes everyone else's job harder.

A great man once said:
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Does this sound like a nation that supports, through Affirmative Action, the non-meritorious promotion of some above others?
Discriminating for or against any group based solely on the color of their skin does not fit Dr. King's dream.

No. The system was put into place for a reason. If you are unhappy about the current situation maybe you should have done something about the previous problems and we wouldn't be here. Plain and simple the reason we need affirmative action is because we are a racist country. If we ignore that fact then we really haven't learned anything.

Affirmative action is a form of racism! To think that you have to be a certain color for it to help you is ridiculous. Unless it is revised to help all those in need affirmative action needs to be wiped from the books!

It should be abolished. Our production is going down because people are hiring the less educated, when there are others who are more equipped for the position. We are getting second rate doctors instead of the ones who know what the heck they are doing, because they let in a person who knows less simply because he/she is a minority. Kids who are white, and even if they are poor cannot get into college simply for being white, even if their sat scores are higher than a black persons. America is suffering for this, and it is not freedom, or realistic for the best value of our country. I think I would rather have a doctor who got 93% on his doctorate, but doesn't have a job, than the black, or hispanic doc who got 87%, but is the one who got the job in the hospital.

Abolished. Affirmative action by its very definition is racially biased and discriminatory. It goes against all that is equal, which is what I thought the civil rights movement was about.
