Prefontaine was killed in a car accident but it had nothing to do with steroids. He died due to a two vehicle collision in which his car, a MGB, swerved into a rock wall and overturned, pinning him underneath it where he was crushed by the weight. The other driver was intoxicated and had a history of drunk driving. Prefontaine was also known as a heavy drinker but tests show that he was not intoxicated at the time.
