They were, and are used by people like market traders, so that they can handle money but have some warmth in their hands. Clever ones have a flap that you can cover the fingers with when you don't need them.

The original idea was that you could eat while wearing gloves. Yeah, that sounds stupid, but wearing gloves during dinner was de rigeur at one time. Fingerless gloves were a practical answer to a fashion rule.

They give you a lot of the warmth of gloves (though not in your fingertips!) yet allow you to retain almost full control and use of the hand/fingers. Hence allowing for handling money/coins etc.

Pointless, totally pointless. Although you can get some with removable (still affixed by a toggle) mitten-style tops for the fingers. They seem more practical
