Actually there is a little star in the upper left hand corner.

It depends on what version of IE you are using. If you are using the most up to date version (version 7) then the favorites option should be located in the upper left hand corner of the screen below the back and forward options.

On top just under where you type in web address and, right click and make sure MENU BAR is checked
