4 feet.

Amanda - why can't you solve this yourself, once you know the equation for getting the perimeter? They've told you that P = 2L + 2W. Well, they've also told you what P is, right? "If the perimeter of a rectangle is 18 ft ...." So P = 18 feet. Can you see this? Then they tell you what W or the width is. Here they're saying that "the width is 5 feet," so W = 5 ft. So you know that P = 18 feet and so P = 18 ft = 2 L + 2 W so 18 ft = 2L + 2 (5ft). Can you do a little multiplication, and then some division by 2, and figure out the rest of it from there?

First, it is a rectangle, so you know the corners are at 90 degree angles. Second, the lengths of opposite sides are equal. The sides are a total of 18' (that's the perimeter.) The width of one side is 5', which means the other side is also 5'. So two sides equal ten feet. (5+5=10) That leaves 8 feet for the other two sides in total. (18-10=8) Since there are two other sides, they must each be four feet in length. (8/2=4) Your answer is 4 feet.

You'll find this easier if you relate it to things you understand.

Think of a rectangular table that is 5 feet long. Using a felt-tip pen, draw a line around the edge of the table, the whole way around. How long is the line you have drawn?

You are told the line is 18 feet, so you should be able to work out the width of the table from this. Forget the maths, think about the table and the pen.

Let Length = L
2L + 2 x 5 =18
2L + 10 = 18
2L = 8
L = 4
Length = 4 ft

(That tip you gave made all the difference!)

If the perimeter is 18 and the width is 5 than the lenght is 4.
18ft= 2(5ft)+ 2(4ft)
18ft= 10ft + 8ft
18f=18ft

2 (l +b) = 18 gives l or length = 4 ft; where b stands for breadth.

4 ft.

5ft. + 5f = 10 ft
18 ft - 10ft = 8 ft.

8 ft divided by 2 = lengths= 4 ft. (answer)

Perimeter formula

P = 2L + 2W

18 = 2L + 2(5)

18 = 2L + 10

18 - 10 = 2L + 10 - 10

8 = 2L

8/2 = 2L/2

8/2 = L

4 = L

The length is 4 feet
