I have done it on several occasions with no problems. Occasionally you do get the ill tempered male betta or male guppy that does a bit of nipping but in my experience those are the exceptions, not the rule.

If the guppy males are colorful and resemble a betta in any way, then the betta would probably attack. My betta lived with danios, alge eaters, and black mollies in a 10gal. They all did fine. I put a male red betta with some yellow tail guppies and the betta puffed up but when he realized the other wasn't, he figured out the guppy wasn't a threat.
Its a trial and error basis, so I suggest not error-ing with two fish you are attached to. Good luck, have fun, and pray the guppy doesn't become an innocent victim of the betta >.<

Try and introduce them to the tank at the same time. That would minimize conflict. I put a Betta in with guppies after the guppies were in the tank for a while, and the guppies actually hassled the Betta for a few days. Then they became buddies.

My grandma had a tank with a betta fish and guppies and gold fish. The betta never attacked any of the other fish. The only fish a betta will attack is another betta.

i added a betta to my tank also i had guppies, neon fish, and two angel fish, and three snails, the betta was stressed by the angel fish for a couple of days but it turned out ok, and they all lived happily together, but its always best to have all fish introduced at the same time , i also noticed when i put new fish in ie: goldfish in the tank afterwards the betta seemed to pick on it quit a bit until the goldfish went belly up after a few days, so afterwards i did not introduce any fish for fear of the betta attacking it
DO NOT put two betta in the same tank or you are asking for trouble,

I keep a betta in all my tanks that hold peaceful fish, the only fish that a betta will fight is another betta. It is a myth that they are "fighting fish", the only reason they fight other male bettas is over territory. If you keep gourami's or other fish with long flowing fins, the betta may give some gill displays and chase them a little bit, but that will go away with time, and most likely no damage will be done. Be sure you don't keep bettas with fin nippers, like barbs, though, or they will harrass your betta.

bettas are very territorial. or at least mines is. he tried to attack my neon tetras while i tried to introduce them to the water temp in their fish store bag. he literally attacked the bag!! course the tank is smaller than a 5 gal. if you have a good sized tank with alot of coverage, i think you'd do fine, just bettas will likely eat the guppies' fry

Betta's and guppies do not mix!
However fish stores sell a clear cage for Betta which attach to the inside of the aquarium with suction cups-the cages will hold up to 4 Betta's-they have removable wall so one Betta would have plenty of room to live.

1 betta
8 cardinals
4 common guppies
4 pygmy cory cats
15 gallon planted tank.
0 problems.
Every Betta has its own attitude and aggression level, so it's never 100%, but usually they will live in peace with other fish.
