I agreed to be a guarantor for a tenant who signed up for a periodic tenancy that is mutually renewed by landlord and tenant every 6 months. My guarantor covers the length of time that the tenant is in the property. However, although the tenant is paying the rent on time every month our relationship has now ended and I no longer have contact with the person. Can I serve notice to withdraw from being the guarantor when the current 6 months tenancy is done, thus forcing the landlord and tenant to draw up a new tenancy agreement with the tenant being forced to get a new guarantor?

Given written notice to the tenant of your intention to terminate the guarantor agmt and give them time to respond whether or not this would affect the tenancy arrangement. Then go ahead and issue same notice to landlord and at next "renewal" period, the lease will be ammended and your name removed as guarantor.

You certainly can just don't sign when the tenancy agreement is due for renewal. Make sure you inform in writing both the landlord and tenant that this is what you are going to do in advance of the due date.

Sorry but I don't seem to be able to ask a question . I have a similar predicament only I don't have the re signing option. I am guarantor for my daughter and husband . they split and she left the home. I am still guarantor for him and he often gets into debt. The agent says I cannot stop .I was unaware of this and thought I no longer had that commitment. can any one help please .I am not in a position to pay his debts off

yes i have been in a similar situation and you just need to contact the landlord to get taken off at the end of the 6 months.
