In the minds of others. Vanity is one's perception of worthlessness, or hollowness, in another human being. The answers of looking in a mirror are merely surface value of the term. (no pun intended)

I have a 3 year old daughter who spends a lot time looking at herself in the mirror. She's also concerned about matching clothes. So I'm guessing at age 3 for most of us. Philosophically, vanity begins when ones concern is greater for the self than it is for others and self admiration is a large part of it. You don't need a mirror for vanity. Selfishness and vanity are close relatives.

Considering that people can be "vain" in more than just one way...looks, talents, abilities, intelligence etc... I believe it starts and breeds inside when someone has not learned humbleness or even humility. When someone begins to see that there are multitudes of "beauty" for example...perhaps they will begin to see that they are just a drop in the ocean and then vanity naturally will ebb away.

Possibly in the notion that you are separated from everyone else, that there is you and there is everyone else that is not you. With this mental construction you can then believe that you are better than others in some way.

when one over-estimates..there are so many things yet to be accomplished
like Einstein said,"My knowledge is just equal to a grain of sand on a beach"...
example, if you know all about biology..u still don't know even 1% about building roads, for eg..and the diff. kinds of roads..etc..!!
