Yes. It's quite silly. Think about it - when or why is it necessary to know the gender of your postmaster?
If you say "Sally is the postmaster" it seems clear that Sally is a woman. If you say "Chris is the postmaster" you might not know the gender, but why would you care?
I hate these gender specific words. Comedienne (which you can't hear the difference in), actress, waitress, etc. Silly silly silly.
