Meconium is a normal substance in your newborn. Meconium is a thick, green, tar like substance that lines your baby's intestines during pregnancy. Typically this substance is not release in your baby's bowel movements until after birth. However, occasionally you will find that your baby will have a bowel movement prior to birth, excreting the meconium into the amniotic fluid.

Meconium is the medical term for the newborn infant's first stools. Meconium is composed of amniotic fluid, mucous, lanugo (the fine hair that covers the baby's body), bile, and cells that have been shed from the skin and the intestinal tract. Meconium is thick, greenish black, and sticky.
In some cases, the baby passes stools (meconium) while still inside the uterus. This usually happens when the baby is under stress. Once the meconium is passed into the amniotic fluid, it is possible for the baby to breathe the meconium into his lungs. This condition is called meconium aspiration and can cause inflammation in the baby's lungs after he is born.

It is the baby's first bowel movement. It is a thick greenish, black tar like substance. If babies experience stress in the womb they may pass meconium into the amniotic fluid and then it can be inhaled which is quite serious as it can lead to pneumonia. Otherwise, they just poop it after they are born.

meconium is the first bowel movement a baby passes after birth, it is usually a lot, very sticky and liquidy, and greenish. A word of advice, do not put your baby in a special outfit at the hospital right away. I ruined my son's "borrowed" newborn layette that way.

Its the first poop the baby makes. It is sometimes done while still inutero, but also the baby should poo some the first day or two after he is born.
It is definitely different from regular baby poo - it is black, tarry, and very sticky. It is important the baby poos this meconium, as it gets rid of the bilirubin (sp?) that causes jaundice.

My daughter had a bowel movement (meconium) before her birth and they had to call in a respiratory team to help her. They didn't let her cry immediately they just wanted to clear her air passages! I was so afraid!

It's the baby's sticky dark colored bowel movement that is usually their first. In some cases the baby will have it dangerously before birth. My first son let his out in my womb and inhaled it. It stuck to his lungs and he was in an incubator and on oxygen for days after birth. He was given an IV with fluids and antibiotics to prevent infection.

Like the others said, it is the first bowel movement a baby has. It's only considered potentially dangerous if the baby has their first BM in utero. It can enter their lungs so that's not good...

It's a thick black substance that plugs the baby's bowels when they are in your uterus. Most babies poop it out shortly after birth. If it comes out before delivery, the baby can get it in their lungs and it becomes very dangerous.
