the family is going to be moving within a couple of years, and we're trying to find something that isn't so expensive. mom says she's wanting to go for something on the edge of town, kind of in the country for our animals, and maybe a three-five bedroom home.

does anybody have any ideas? thanks.

You might want to do a comparison here (as the city will definitely have some influence):
http://www.cityrating.com/costofliving.asp
http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html?step=form
That will give you a comparison of cities with the Consumer Price Index.

Since you plan on buying a house (and remember, probably there will be a burst in the Real Estate bubble, making many good opportunities available)
