Rather than spoil it, all i got to say is read the novels, even if you havent picked up a book in years.
There are four in total, souly based off from the video game. The first three are available together at stores like barns and noble for like 22.00. Well worth the money, and heres why...

#1- the fall of reach- starts out the whole story of halo and the origins and upbringing of master chief and the begging events before the first halo game for xbox. I mean this book goes into detail, describing the yougner years of chief and what happened in the begging. My favorite of all of them.

#2-the flood-this book is the same as the first halo game for xbox. Everythign you remember from the first game is in here, but 1,000 times more detailed. Clears up alot of quetions.

#3-the first strike-this book is the bridge between halo1 and halo2, and desribes the details of what happends in between the fall of halo and builds up to the game, halo2.

Then you must play halo2.....
After that read the final book, the ghost of onyx, which is at stores seprate from the first three for like 15.00. The final book describes the events AFTER halo2 the game, and builds/ is the bridge for halo 3. This is where alot of confusion is cleared up about the halo2 game. Your answer will be in here.

Seriously though...buy the books!!! I havent read a book for like 5 years, and loved these...and the games! Makes the games so much more fun to play and understand.
