I keep having nightmares where I am being attacked by something that I cannot see. Sometimes its a dark shadow of somekind and sometimes a person (rarely). I feel like I can't breath in my dream, too. A funny thing too is that I know that in my dream I'm having the nightmare and I'm trying to wake up and I'm yelling, "wake me up" hoping that I will talk in my sleep and maybe my boyfriend or my daughter hear me and try to wake me up. In some cases, I feel that I did wake up, but then realize that I didn't and that I'm still dreaming. What's up w/this dream? Is there something out there making me have these horrible nightmares?

Being aware that you are dreaming in a dream is called a lucid dream. Coming from experience, your dream maybe trying to tell you that you are feeling overwhelmed and "smothered" in some way or another in your life. Since there is no real face to the attacker, and typically a shadow, the feeling may be internal. Meaning you are putting the pressure on yourself, maybe by trying to meet or keep unrealistic standards you have set for yourself in your social life or work life or possibly by keeping a secret about yourself that you may need to be made known.

Since it is a lucid dream, next time you have the nightmare, and become aware that you are dreaming, stand up to the shadow. I may sound crazy, but just try it.

I would suggest that you lay down on a couch or a bed in a very safe place during the day, and breath deeply and slowly to help yourself relax. Then in your mind try to summon the sensation you feel in your dream. When you feel the attack coming, mentally stand up and turn around to see what "it" is. Sometimes dreams are manifestations of an emotion or an event that we are trying to suppress. Keep at this until you see what it is that is threatening you. Good Luck.

usually in the dreams where you know youre dreaming, you can do whatever you like. when im having nightmares and something bad is threatening me i make something up- like a spell and say "right now it will vanish" or "in three seconds i will wake up"(i dont actually wake up but i begin a new dream) trusting the words i have spoken. it generally works, that is why i normally dont have nightmares, though in my real life i dont feel threatened. maybe you do. you should really find the cause in your real life, because a repetitive dream means that your problem isnt solved yet

although we feel powerless during nightmares, we can actually try to do something about it. before going to bed every night, tell yourself that you will wake up if you have that dream. do this every night, and eventually it may work. i have used this technique before and it has worked.
as for the dream itself, only you can answer what it means, or why its recurring. however, if you can start to feel more control over the bad dream, you may be able to take it with a grain of salt when you are awake.

You may have a sleep disorder, especially when you say you can't breath. Go to a sleep clinic for a test to see if you have sleep apnea. Recurring dreams/nightmares are fairly common, and normally triggered by something traumatic in your sub-conscious mind. If you have no physical sleep disorders, you may want to try hypnosis.

You may be obsessing about the dream itself. If you find yourself worrying about having the nightmare all the time, chances are you'll have it. That used to happen to me. Just try and relax, forget about it and you'll probably find the nightmare will fade away and eventually stop troubling you..

You need to say prayers, mantras, (depend on your religion) before going to bed.
Protect your aura by drawing protective white light around yourself when you go to bed. Try it, and see if you have such dreams reoccur. If it doesn't, you know what it means.
