If you are upgrading your OS from an older Windows version to Windows Vista I would backup everything important to you because Windows has been known to wipe out things when upgrading. It doesn't happen all the time but it does happen.

No matter how you are planning to upgrade your computer, new drive?, new processor?, more memory?, or new OS? No matter what,BACK UP ALL OF YOUR DATA, including pictures.
If you are buying the upgrade components at someplace such as BEST BUY you can tell them what you want to do and they will tell what you need and how to do it, but again BACK IT UP.

You will not lose your files if you do an Upgrade of the Windows.
You will lose your files if you upgrade your hard drive.
