My 7 1/2 month old is the proud new owner of two bottom teeth. He bites me every time we nurse, and it hurts, for godsake! I've tried saying "NO BITING" loudly but that just makes him laugh and eggs him on...I've tried not reacting at all thinking he'd get tired of the joke without my cries of pain or yelling...I have a pump, but pumping for every single one of his liquid meals seems like lot to keep up with..or maybe some of you do that? I want to nurse for a year but he'll be an Enfamil baby in short order if this keeps up. Advice?

Hey mom I feel your pain, I tried to breastfeed my baby unfortunately it only last for the first three months because of the pain and I know you want to give your baby the best and breast milk is the best my advice would be to set aside some time and just pump enough milk to last for awhile you know you can freeze it up til two weeks that way when its time for feeding you will already have the milk ready and he can get breast milk without killing mom in the process.

Poor mom! I went through the same exact thing with my son! He got his teeth in at around 6 months. I worked with him for at least a month and he didn't quit. So, eventually I gave up trying and pumped for while (2 mo or so) and then switched to formula. At that age I didn't mind so much because he was already on solids. So switching the milk wasnt a big deal. I too, wanted to nurse longer. I nursed my daughter for a 13 mo.!

If you want, keep trying. Although there is no gaurentee he will stop. If he doesn't, pump (its still better than formula).

Chances are he's not biting at the beginning of his feeding, he's hungry and wants to get something in his tummy. Next time he bites, break the suction with your finger and firmly tell him "NO". Let him latch on again, but if he starts to bite break the suction and tell him "NO MORE!" and end the feeding for the time being. He'll soon learn that mommy means business, and that biting is not acceptable behavior if he wants to nurse. Don't give up yet, and don't rush to give him formula, that can cause more problems than you need right now! Neither one of my kids ever had a bottle, let alone formula - hang in there, you can do this!!

My son used to do the same thing. I always pressed his face into my breast firm and quick so he would stop. This kind of mashes too much breast in their mouth making them open their jaw and quit biting. After a few episodes of this they learn that you aren't going to tolerate biting and quit trying to bite altogether.

Make sure he's got lots of goodies to soothe his gums besides you... my son used to love frozen facecloths. The rough texture feels good on the gums combined with a soothing cool feeling and it's easy to hold.

My son used to do that. I'd stick my finger in between his teeth and my nipple every time he did that and be done with nursing until he learned to quit. Sometimes you just have to continue telling them not to bite.

OUCH! pumping may be your only answer. chewing also helps to soothe gums. my sister-in-law put oragel on her babies teeth before feedings. it seemed to help. good luck!
