I have a 2month old redfin shark that is supposed to grow to 6 inches he's probably only about 2 1/2 inches now but I'm leaving him in a 1gallon aquarium do you think that matters? Will he just stay the size he is now? And when lights are on and in the day he NEVER comes out from underneath these big rocks and just acts scared and dead what can I do so I get to see him sometimes? I don't wanna take the rocks out either they're pretty...

How can he be hiding? He does not really have anywhere to go. Every one that told you 1 gallon is not enough for that guy is right. How could he grow to 6 inches in there? That would be like expecting you to live in your bed because you can fit in there. He is not likely to live long enough to grow much in a space that small. He might not need a 20 gallon tank , but he would outgrow a 10 eventually and you would need to move him to a 20 or give him to someone that has a tank that big. If he had more room to swim around you would see him a lot. I have the same kind of fish and he really likes to swim through things but he does not hide much. He does not mind the light either. I do not know what he does while the lights are off and I am sleeping but I see him any time I look at that tank. If you must stick to having a one gallon tank you really should only keep a betta in there and even those guys like more space than that.

First off, a two month old red fin shark would be less than 1 inch long unless it was fed super food. Your shark is at least 4-6 months. Fish dont mature that quickly.

Second, a one gallon tank isn't good enough. It is too small. If you want your shark to behave naturally, you will need to upgrade. A 10gal will be ok, if he's the only fish. I say this because I realize not everyone has room for a 20gal. It does not matter what size tank he is in, he will grow. All you are doing now is slowing that growth process because he can not get enough oxygen and other needed things. I have no doubt that, if he lives for the next year or two, he will be a 6 inch fish, just like it says he's supposed to be. From my experience, thats more than a 1gal tank is long. Very inhumane.

Third, sharks are nocturnal, only really active at night. They do best in pairs and are otherwise poor community fish(pairs will harass eachother, single fish will harass all his tank-mates). They hide during the day, so taking the rocks out would stress him to no end. Within a few days you would very likely have a dead shark. They need to hide from predators, in this case, human faces.

Please remember, just because something is pretty doesn't mean it should stay in your tank. Think about the fish's feelings, not your own. The fish cant care for itself like you, and relies on you for its every need.

Please take good care of him. Sharks are one of my favorite fish, and I hate seeing them mistreated.

a Redfin in a 1 gallon? That's a shame. Certainly not a big enough environment for it. Think if someone locked you in a broom closet. What would be the point of you moving a few inches?

Move it into a larger tank and check your lighting. These sharks usually spend the day relaxing, at night they will graze on rocks. If you want to see that, you will have to create a better environment for it.

he needs a 20 gallon tank MINIMUM.
chances are the water parameters are a bit off and thats getting to him, and the stress of being in such a confined space.

if you were in a tiny cupboard with big faces staring down at you, you'd try and hide too!

either buy him a proper tank NOW, or take him back to the shop.
actually scratch that, just take him back to the shop, buy a proper tank, spend a good 2-3 weeks fishless cycling and THEN get your fish.

NO fish can truely thrive in a 1 gallon tank, not even a betta.

The size of the tank is part of the problem. As is a possible lack of more hiding places that he likes. As wierd as it sounds, the more hiding places he has the more likely it is that you will see him and the more room he has to move around the more he will move around. A larger tank with more plants and rocks will probably draw him out much more.

Best of luck with him!

I sure hope you at least meant a 10 gallong tank and even that is too small for the fish you are describing. If its a 1 gallon tank you would have a hard time keeping up your water quality. Fish do not grow to the size of the tank, unless you mistreat them somehow to stunt them they grow to their size, period. Keeping them in too small of a tank is a terrible thing to do.

Do a little research on the shark. Maybe that species hates the light.
