I lived in Edinburgh for four years. Although it is a beautiful city (much nicer than Glasgow it has to be said), it is full of snobs and smug bourgeois, both English and Scottish. I think that is part of it. Also, Glasgow and surrounding areas are very working class on the whole and so its a class thing as well (which is ironic since much of the reason the West coast is kept poor is because of economic and social policies coming out of Edinburgh). Culturally the two are very different; the sectarian divide is much stronger in Glasgow. Two very different places.

because some people from Edinburgh are snobs and dont like the so-called "working class" aspects of Glasgow. Remember that Edinburgh has rough parts to it as well.
Finally, what's the best part of Edinburgh? The road to Glasgow!!

Its the same reason we like to beat up our little brothers - because we can! Glasgow has always been crap and they know it. They have always been number 2 and we all know what a number 2 is, don't we folks?
The place is ugly; the people are ugly; they are mostly inbred, retarded and smell badly. They can't really help it, but much like when you see one of those 500 pounders waddle their way onto some TV talk show wanting to lose weight, you can't help but feel smug that you aren't one of them. So it is with us Edinburgers. Even when we feel depressed, all we need to know is that no matter how bad it gets, when we wake up in the morning we'll still be winners, whereas Weegies will always be Weegies. Amen. ;-)

Its just a healthy rivalry between the two cities. A bit of fun. Works both ways.

Knock on someones door in Edinburgh and they will say "Come in, you will have had your tea?"
Do the same in Glasow and it'll be "Come in and have your tea"
