I too live in Canada and I bought mine at walmart,I have the Medela Mini which is a single electric/batterer/manual pump I paid $120 for it,if you go to the medela website they will send an agent to your house if you want,I had also borrowed my cousins same pump so I could pump both sides and it was obviously twice as fast,if you want you can buy the double it is about $300 though.I would stick with the single, its great!I pumped all my milk so it was alot of work but if you are doing just some of the time its not too bad.A little helpful hint as well, the cheap little Gerber bottles fit perfectly on the medela pump!!!!!I used the metal lids from the hospital so that is the only thing i cant help you on.Good luck!!
I would not rent one just because it will cost you way too much and if you buy one at least you will have something to show for it!LOL!!

I am in Stratford!! I've seen them in Shoppers Drugmart, though you might have to call around. I have the small electric pump as well as the manual one (which is kind of annoying). You must be after one of the ones that is for regular use (like at a hospital). I'm not sure where you can get those, but the smaller ones at Shoppers for sure. Hope this helps!!!

Since you are in Canada, that alters a lot of things. There are supposed to be Babys R Us up there, so I'd start with them.
Also, consider going online, including Ebay. The pump itself is "self-contained", so the breast milk will never enter the pump. You just have to buy new bottles, tubing, and suction cups, (that bottle kit) which you should be able to get easily.
We got ours at Target here in the states, for about $270US. They shouldn't be $1,000 CA.
If you have never used one before, seriously consider renting. We used ours for about 5 weeks before my wife gave up breastfeeding, since the baby just wouldn't suck, and her milk never came in that well. (She got sick at week 3, and couldn't breastfeed, and the pumping wasn't going well.) So, we spent all that money instead of renting one and returning it.

Babies R Us and Target sell them. I see them on eBay all the time. $1000 is BS - you will find one on the Internet MUCH cheaper.

I would call your baby's doctor. Our pediatritian sold us a brand new unit, that he gets at cost. He stocks them there, and sells them to all the patients. If not, call your hospital, they will be able to refer you to a place.
