fourth problem

13.5 - 2m = 5m + 41.5

13.5 - 2m + 2m = 5m + 41.5 + 2m

13.5 = 7m + 41.5

13.5 - 41.5 = 7m + 41.5 - 41.5

- 28 = 7m

- 28/7 = 7m/7

- 28/7 = m

- 4 = m

5y - 8 = 4x + 10 or 5y - 4x = 10 + 8 = 18
2x + 7.8 = 9.4 or 2x = 9.4 - 7.8 = 1.6
13= 5m -2 or 5m = 13 + 2 = 15
13.5 - 2m = 5m + 41.5 0r 7m = 13.5 - 41.5 = 28
35 = -1 - 6m or -6m = 36 0r m = - 6
8 ( y -1 ) = 4 ( y + 4 ) or 8y - 8 = 4y + 16
= 4y= 24 or y = 6
4 ( 5 - r ) = 3 ( 2r -1 ) or 20 - 4r = 6r - 3
= 10 r = 23 or r = 2.3
12 ( n -3 ) - 5 ( n+2) = 2( n -4 ) + 7
12n - 36 - 5n - 10 = 2n - 8 + 7
7n - 46 = 2n -1
5n = 45 or n = 9

6y - 8 = 4x + 10
add 8 and divide by 6 on both sides
y = 4x +18 = 2(2x+9)
thats all you can do

2x+7.8 = 9.4
on both side subtract 7.8:
2x =1.6
divide by 2:
x = 0.8

13=5m-2
add 2 from both sides
15=5m
divide by 5: m=3

13.5 - 2m = 5m +41.5
add 2m and subtract 41.5 both sides
-28 = 7m divide by 7: m=-4

35 =-1 -6m
add 1 on both sides
36 = - 6m divide by -6: m=-6

8(y-1) =4(y+4)
perform indicated operations
8y - 8 = 4y +16
subtract 4y and add 8 to each side
4y = 24
divide by 4: y = 6

4(5-r) =3(2r-1)
as above, perform indicated opns
20-4r =6r -3
add 3 and add 4r to both sides
23 =10r divide by 10 r = 2.3

12(n-3) -5(n+2) =2(n-4) +7
perform indicated operations:
12n -36 -5n -10 =2n -8 +7
add like terms
17n -46 = 2n -1
subtract 2n and add 46 to each side
15n = 45
divide by 15 n=3

as you can see these types of problems consist of a five simple steps to take in order as follows. all steps will not always be necessary.

1. Perform any indicated operations
2. add like terms together
3. add subtract multiply or divide anything to both sides of the equation to get the unknown on one side and the constant on the other.
4. divide the constant times any multiplier of the unknown

if you approach each problem in this manner you should have no trouble solving.

Just simplify by performing the same operation on the left and right:

First problem:

6y - 8 = 4x + 10
6y = 4x + 18 { added 8 to both sides }
y = 4x/6 + 3 { divided both sides by 6 }
y = 2x/3 + 3 { simplified the 4/6 to 2/3 }
y = (2x + 9)/3 { combined the two terms, if that's what your teacher wants }

Now, do the same for each problem.
