Fiction is made up. Non-fiction is not made up, however, that does not mean it is real life. Non-fiction can also be made up, but does not necessarily include aliens/ghosts/robots. Non-fiction is made up in a sense that the characters are/can be made up, but they are real people, and don't have super powers and deal with supernatural beings; but lead a normal life, just like a real person would.

Fiction means that the story / novel / whatever is not real. Fiction may be based off of something that really happened, but it didn't really happen.
Non-fiction means that the story / novel / whatever is real.

Instead of thinking of fiction as "not real", I prefer to think of non-fiction books as books of information, rather than story. Non-fiction books are cookbooks, books about how to repair your car, raise your puppy, do your taxes.
Fiction is literature. It may contain "facts", but it is not an account of an actual event.
The primary objective of non-fiction is to provide information. Fiction is to provide entertainment, to tell a story. You may learn something along the way, but it is not the main goal.
NF gets a bad rap. The very name NF implies something is missing – that fiction has something NF does not. We don’t call fiction “non-true” or “non factual”. It’s almost as though information books are socially inferior to the “upper crust” stuff we call literature.

Hi, Fiction is made up as in say, Harry Potter (I know... I've upset a million kids) and non fiction is stuff that is of the real world like say Ray Mears bushcraft!!!
You have also of course biographies which are a mixture of both (sorry!) arf arf!
