If you had the sterilization done via key-hole surgery, your abdominal cavity will have been inflated with carbon dioxide gas. This can cause a lot of pain, particularly in the shoulder area for some women. The shoulder pain is due to the fact that the same group of nerves supply the undersurface of the diaphragm and the shoulder area.
It is more unusual to have pain on one side. If the pain isn't improving after your operation and is going from your loin (ie the middle of your back on the right) to your groin on your right, and particularly if it is spasmodic, you need to get it checked out medically, as the pain could be arising from your right kidney.
It is also possible that you have a small hernia on the right side, and that gas has tracked down into this - however I think this would be quite unusual.

did you have a tubal ligation? if you had to go under anesthesia
they blow you up with gas to inflate the your stomach to be able to reach your tubes.well the gas needs time to pass. i had discomfort so bad for the first 3 days i could not even card for my newborn. it will pass, something for pain may help you.
