The US is by many orders of magnitude the world leader in innovation. No one else even close, and I do worry about the lack of innovation elsewhere because there is a lot of wasted brainpower in the world -- but innovation is alive and well in the US.

However - US innovators also pay attention to what the market wants and to what is profitable. The reality is that alternative sustainable energy is currently NOT economically efficient or productive. This is due to the realities of supply and demand and costs and the laws of physics. Talk is cheap, people reveal with their spending what they REALLY value and politicians know this.

It's a cold hard fact that carbon-heavy, polluting, globe-warming, politically incorrect oil and coal are hands-down the most efficient and cost-effective energy sources for transportation and electricity production. And that is why we use them. If something else were better, no one would have to be forced into it -- lots of people would get rich rolling out those technologies and lots of consumers would save money by using them. That is not happening.

Everyone wants some magic bullet, some Manhattan Project to magically change the rules and usher in a green economy overnight. Those things will gradually happen over time as technology advances and as relative cost structures change -- just as people now are gradually improving hybrids and batteries and capacitors and windmill blades and electric cars, and as utilities slowly begin again to build nuclear power plants -- but all of this stuff takes time. You cannot get instant gratification by throwing infinite money at the problem, because the limitation is actual physical and human resources, and the time required to design, test, develop, improve, etc.

Innovation is there and always has been. The problem in most aspects of life is money and it doesn't take a back seat to anything. The car is out there that will get 150 miles to a gallon of gas , free energy is out there for everyone right now but with billions of dollars to be lost not to mention all those high paying jobs that will go bye bye, we'll never see even 2% of the innovations, unless it will help us cook food faster or do laundry more efficiently. But the big ones, the ones that could really change the world are buried by the government and oil companies and car manufacturers before you can sneeze. SGRS

The US has been involved in a tremendous amount of new product innovation. However, the issue of sustainability is legitimate. The simple answer to our lack of sustainability is profit.

It is much less expensive for American companies to send their new product innovations abroad both for further research and development, as well as production. In this way, many American corporations continue to do well as is witnessed by the record profits and the upward trend of the stock exchange markets. American consumers are still benefiting from the lower cost of foreign production, but the American worker is hurting in all areas. From the factory worker to the professional accountant, engineer or manager, Americans have seen there buying power recede. High paying jobs are being replaced by lower paying service jobs. The lower paying service jobs are engaged in a wage struggle with illegal immigrants who are willing to accept still lower pay.

America is in a severe downward spiral. This transition if it continues in its current trend will severely impact our economy. Our American corporations and our government must soon decided if the desertion of America for profit is more important than the health and welfare of the American citizen.
