The posts here that talk about heat are correct, the hard drive posts are not.

Even when your computer is running, you power management scheme will turn off the hard drives after a period of inactivity. In standby mode they are definitely turned off. when a hard drive is turned off the heads are parked and the platters are stopped. You are in no more danger at that point than if you had shut down the system entirely.

Heat is another issue. In standby mode the laptop stays active enough to recognize whatever input can bring it out of standby mode. Depending on your processor, this could generate heat and that could build up if the laptop is in an unventilated bag. Still, I wouldn't consider this a likely scenario. I would think you would have already noticed if this was happening.

Standby mode should power down the hard drive, so it should be fine. It might still create heat though, and that is not good if it is inside the case. If it is going to be left in the case for a longer period of time, put it in Hibernate mode instead.

You definitely do not want to use standby if you're going to be moving the system. A slight bump can ruin the hard drive. Assuming you're using windows, either shut down completely or use hibernate.

don't use the stand by, it could freeze your system if slightly hit. the computer is still on even though in standby mode. you are better off to power it down. the fan and such small things are still running.

Yes, it might cause problems due to overheating, if you keep it in a closed bag, all that hot air accumulates.

But there is a risk is to your hard disk, it has moving parts which can get damaged.

If you really want fast startup times, try hibernating it.
