Turn off some services that are running when the computer starts that you dont need. Defrag your PC and increase the virtual memory.
There are lots of ways of improving PC performance but that depends on how extensive you wanna take this project. You can RAID your harddrives, add another gig of memory, overclock it but i doubt if you wanna do all that so just stick with the above for now.

Good routine maintenance ,if observed, is best practice. The OS, any OS, will appear to lag or slow down after XX amount of data or tasks are done. This is a magic number that very few are actually aware of.
Every system experiences a degradation over time, that is natural, backups are the cure.
On windows you can increase the Page File to get a faster and cleaner running OS.
explained here:
http://www.langa.com/current.htm#2
He also talks about the MFT, a known source of errors if not checked regularly.
http://www.langa.com/backups/backups.htm
That is Backups 1 through 10. He explains what to backup, why to make it a routine, and the benefits of it.
Moving the Page File to a Partition of its own, 5g or so, with no other Sys Files or anything on it works well with the NTFS.
Keep it kool keep it backed up, keep it defragged and it will run as fast as is allowed by the Hardware/Software mix that makes a PC work.

yes, modify the startup to prevent applications from loading automatically and wasting RAM usage.
start menu --> run, type "msconfig" (no quotes)
click the startup tab on the right.
everything checked loads every time you boot windows. do some research on the particular processes and un check the garbage that in not vital to the system.
this will also eliminate some of the garbage icons that show up in the system try on the bottom right of your desktop and increase your boot speed.
other than that, run the usual disk cleanup, defragment, antivirus, and spyware apps to clean up the system.
by the way, what speed ram did you buy? I hope you made sure it was the same speed as the existing ram. Remember that all of your installed Ram will run at the same speed. If you are using new faster ram with older slower ram, the new ram will clock itself down to the speed of the older ram.

How could all of us be attentive to what you're able to do once you have instructed us no longer something approximately your laptop? Oh wow. That situation is previous. there is not any longer something you're able to do. you're caught with an AGP slot, for crying out loud. you won't be in a position to even get an outstanding video card for it! additionally, you have not got 2 3ghz CPUs. you in all probability have a Hyperthreaded Pentium 4, that's additionally crap. supply it to Goodwill and get something good.

posting specs would help tremendously.
Without knowing anything about the machine other than that it has more than 1GB or ram, you could switch to a faster processor (with the current or new motherboard). You could get a newer, faster video card.
