A router also acts as a physical firewall, better than software firewalls. You can use both together for added protection to ward off hackers, etc. :)

Yes and No. You can get routers with built in firewalls, block website and track internet activity. If this appeals to you, get one. If not, do you have Tivo or a modern gaming console, or plan to get one in the future. If so, you'll need a router.
Note: Some of the answers I see around here apply only to wireless routers.

Yes. It helps prevent attacks that go directly to your IP Address. This was especially useful back in the day when people would spam random IP addresses with MSN Messenger messages (which is installed and run in the background of all pcs).
If it is a wireless router, make sure your network is password protected.

No, routers are used to connect and facilitate communication between multiple networks. If you want to connect multiple computers on 1 network, use a switch.
There are plenty of software firewalls available, no need to buy a router to act as a firewall.

No, it is a sales gimmick!
Windows has a firewall, most anti viruses have a firewall, and the router firewall works by blocking others trying to access the router, so if you do not have a router, you will not be attacked!!!

having a router is just extra security if you have only one computer plus you know when you might have someone come over that uses a laptop or family. So it helps. Just leave it there but make sure its secured with either WEP 128bit or WPA.. :)

I personnally would not set one up on one computer as the failure to follow all settings could lead to your bandwith being exposed and someone could use it on their laptop if in there reach and use your system to run their equipment and maybe yours

Only if it's wireless and you have those capabilities with your laptop or PC.
otherwise, no.
Also you do not need it to run a firewall, you can do that with software.
