If I'm driving from the east coast of MD to the west coast in CA and back, do you think three weeks would suffice if I wanted to do the trip along with moderate site-seeing along the way, or should I plan for more time?

We made the same trip. I made one mistake. I had planned everything to the "Nth degree." Even where to buy gas and Rest Stops! That lasted for three days. My itinerary was tossed, with the exception of reservations in Yellowstone N.P. I made the reservations in February and was told that those were the last reservations for those dates.

After tossing the itinerary, we started having fun! My 8 year old son wanted to see the Prairie Dog Town. (Which is one place I would have never considered to stop!) We spent 3 hours watching those little critters, and had a ball!

We were pushed for time on the way back. And the last day we drove over 1000 miles so we could get back on time for work.

If you can spend more time, do so! This is a great country we have with tons of things to see and do. We have made this journey 5 times, and with the exception of the Grand Canyon, we never saw the same thing twice.

Have Fun! We did!

If you drive straight thru only stopping for bathroom/food breaks and to sleep it will probably take you about 4-5 days each way. That would leave you with anywhere from 11-13 days of sightseeing. That should be plenty of time, depending on how many stops you want to make and how long you plan on staying there.

If this is a once in a lifetime trip, you are going to miss a lot. If not, it should be enough to see everyting in one section (example this trip take in the center of the country, next one, the southern route, next the northern border route.)
