I controls the universe, I controls the spice...

I am a Sci-fi nut. I loved that Dune movie. Yes, oil is much like the spice. Also Bush is much like "Darth Vader" in that he is the force of evil. We are much like the white rebels fighting the evil dark "empire". The question is. Will good prevail over evil? Also see much the same in Bush as the evil "Borg". You will be assimilated, resistance is futile.

I don't have a link or anything handy, but yes... if I recall correctly, from a preface I read to the book a number of years ago, that analogy is intended. The spice is symbolic of oil.

Science Fiction stories often do this, replace one person/place/event/item with another so that the story writer can make a point without the reader being encumbered by their predisposition towards that person/place/event/item.

Really, that's the whole purpose behind science fiction... to be able to make statements and force people to think about the events of the present without their preconceived notions clouding their judgements.

It's quite effective if the person reading/watching is aware of the analogies.

This is particularly true for political topics. Everyone hates the corrupt, ideologically compromised political despot in the movies... but it's harder to hate that despot when he's the guy you voted for. Science Fiction takes people out of that self-defensiveness and makes them actually think... and if they're aware of it, they can learn from it. (Sadly, many aren't.)

In about 15 years....nah.

Dictators don't leave office until they're overthrown. Bush leaves office next year.

The only real dictator with oil connections is Hugo Chavez.

in some ways... there is a war in which it is a major factor (not saying that's what the war is about, just that it's a factor) and it can make your eyes blue (contacts)... and it can make people able to control large beasts (sand worms versus computerized vehicles)... so sure.. it has a lot of similarities.

Could be but unfortunately I don't think that some dude riding a giant worm is going to overthrow our evil dictator president any time soon.

Very similar, only there is no relation between the oil and the cobra.
