Look at how they react to each other. Prairie dogs have certain calls that they use as recognition cues, also they have warning calls that means other prairie dogs should runa nd hide in their nests. You can hear a difference and see a difference in how they react. Also, dogs--watch the different reaction between a dog barking at another dog, and a dog growling at another dog.
Cats too-hiss vs. meow--clearly they have different meanings and other cats can recognize these cues.
