I recently got married and decided that I want to make my maiden name my second middle name... as in Jane Ann Doe Smith. No hyphenation. I went to the Secretary of State to have my license changed and they wouldn't allow me unless I hyphenated either my middle & maiden, or maiden & last.
Now I have to get my social security number changed and I'm wondering if I can still do what I want with my name since I couldn't do it with my license? Will there be issues with my social security if someone uses the right number, but doesn't enter the second middle name?

As far as I'm aware, you can change your name to anything you want as long as you aren't doing it for the purposes of fraud. Usually there's a quick-and-easy way to do it for women taking their husbands name, which might be the problem you had: you have to go about the long route since you are adopting a new middle name AND last name.

And I was given two middle names at birth. In most documents, I go by "Jane Anne Smith", on my birth certificate I am "Jane Anne Doe Smith" and on my Driver's license I am "Jane Anne D Smith" since they couldn't fit the whole thing on there.

The only problem I ever had was one time I was checking in for a plane ticket and the gate agent said "Your license says your name is D'Smith and your ticket says it's Smith. Which is correct?" I explained and got my boarding passs. So I don't think it'll provide you any additional protection, but I've never had a problem with multiple middle names.

You can legally have 10 middle names. Yes you may run into some problems but it's your choice.
Good Luck,

That's exactly what I want to do (I'm getting married in October). I don't see why it would be a problem. I hear of people with multiple middle names all the time.

I think you need to have your name match on all legal documents (lic, soc sec card, etc). If you are intent on having two middle names, you may have to petition the court for a legal name change - there is usually a fee of arounf $350 and you will need to go to court to make it happen. Bottom line is if Prince could change his name to that unpronouncable character, you can have two middle names - you just need to go the extra mile to make it happen. But make sure all documents match !!!

yes you can but that will be your full middle name. my ex had two and he went by one or the other informally but for big things like social security or driver's licenses and all that he had to use both. so if someone is using your social security number they have to use both names.

The one thing we are entitled to in America is a name, middle name or any name, The number is truly the key to identification, not the name.

I think you can but I think you have to go to court and get approved by a judge. Call up a lawyer and ask they can always tell you.

You can have 10000000000 middle names if you choose. There is no law against that.
