She had scarlett fever as a child. When she got older the lingering affects of the illness slowly took her sight away. She started to go blind after an incident were she was kicked by a horse.

On the show, I am not quite sure how it was portrayed, but, in the telling of it by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Mary had scarlet fever, a high temperature, and that caused her to lose her vision, as I recall reading. You can find a lot of information on the Laura Ingalls Wilder main web site page.

IIRC she got malaria or some horrible illness and she lost her sight.

I loved that show!!!!! If i remember right.... she just got sick and became blind.... no accident or injury that i remember.
