Releasing a movie like that during Black History month seems to add insult to injury.

I'm with you on this one! Eddie Murphy is SO talented... and he has generally wasted that talent the past ten years or more. Every once in awhile he does something like "Shrek" or "Dreamgirls" that is pretty darned good. The he blows it with "Daddy Day Care" or "Norbit."

One of the reasons he has given in interviews for this is the fact that he has settled down to the family life. He has kids now. A lot of the movies he has done were because he thought his kids would enjoy them. When they are 5 years old, they like fart jokes better than good acting. Playing in movies where he plays more than one part was his mode of getting to use some of that talent he has, while being in a movie that was supposedly more "kid friendly."

Personally, I think you can be in a movie that is kid-friendly AND good. He just hasn't made very good choices, going for the potty humor over anything more intelligent. But that's just me. Some people like that sort of thing. Especially the little kids. That said, he got divorced last year, and his kids have GOT to be getting up there in age by now. So maybe in the next few years we'll see a few more "Dreamgirls" and a few less "Norbits."

In addition to this, February tends to be a poor movie month for the studios. So they usually release the dogs. It has nothing to do with it being Black History Month, but the tendency is for the movies that they know are maybe not so good to be released around this time of year.
