I believe that some people, Not all, who are unexplainably considered mentally challenged such as some psychophrenic people, could possibly be possessed.

here is an example that is true!

A man I know very well, was having strange things happen to him, such as violent rages, paranoia, etc. He was getting worse and worse that his wife had to have him put in an institution, she was convinced he was posessed, the doctors labelled him as pschophrenic because they had no other explanation for his actions. After almost a year in the mental hospital and no changes in his mental health, his wife decided to bring him to a priest. The priest tried everything, performing exorcisms and praying. After approximately 2 weeks he was well. He had no recollections of the time in the mental ward or what had happened. He had not before been a big believer in God, but after his recovery, he for several years, carried a bible with him everywhere.
I believe his story because of how fearful he is of certain things. He is now very careful of the things he does, He won't do anything that may jeopardize his well being.

Personally, I've never been possessed. As to whether possession is 'real', it largely depends on perception and the culture you are brought up in. As a poster higher up suggested certain religions treat possession as part of spiritual rites, Catholicism, Voudoun, and tenets of Shamanism all have instances of this.

There have been dozens of recorded cases, the historical ones could be related to mental health illnesses like schizophrenia that weren't commonly understood back then. More modern ones could be attributed to simple hysteria. Personally I keep an open mind I'm pretty sure that if you google for the topic you will find only about two or three instances where the church has gone on record as saying that these were true spiritual possessions.

Possession is a very human concept. Most cultures have it in some form, whether it is the Western concept of demonic possession or possession by loa in Voudun and Santeria. Christians speak of being "filled with the Holy Spirit", which can be interpreted as a kind of spiritual possession. Mediums practise a kind of willing possession when they "channel" spirits. There are hundreds of documented cases of possession across the ages. As a psychologist and a spiritual person, it is difficult to assess the true nature of possession. I suspect it is a form of hysteria in most cases, probably quite psychosomatic. Many mental illnesses can cause symptoms of possession. However, I do believe in a spirit world and I think you have to keep an open mind. I certainly get the heebie-jeebies when I've watched footage of so-called exorcisms. See the case of Annaliese Michel, legend of the Bell Witch and the case of Nicole Obri.

I believe in several stages of possession. First, Infatuation...an unhealthy curiosity developes. #2, Invitation. One must be delving into the spirit plain and inadvertently express contact. #3, Infestation...a spirit actually answers the call and is drawn into our physical plain and begins interacting with the victim. #4 is Possession. The victim is spiritually weak and vulnerable, and is confused and not sure what is occurring, until complete cohabitation begins in the body. Soon, the demon has manifested and the hapless victim becomes a statistic of either the local mental health sanatorium/asylum.....or dies, the ultimate goal of the invading spirit.

I agree that some mental patients are possessed. The only ones that couldn't be would be the ones that know how to stop it/could stop it. I know for a fact the bible will not work on everything but in some cases maybe. Just know that it might protect you and it might not.

NO. I haven't personally been possessed. But I believe that others have. I also believe that when people do drugs or drink alcohol they allow a certain spirit to overtake them. Thats why they call alcohol "spirits". These substances cause people to act in ways that they wouldn't normally behave. So, to some extinct yes!

I was once possessed by the ghost of a raving cow that had 'mad cow disease'. So I took a trip to see the 'mad woman' who lived in the rickety house at the end of my street. We'll she chanted a few expletives at me, and emptied a cup of wee on my head whilst simultaneously assaulting me. Surprisingly, this worked, and now I no longer am possessed by a cow. Anyway I was'nt really in the mooooooood.
