a liquid substance thought to be some kind of acid has been spilt on the floor
what steps would you take to clean this up?

You need to know what it is first! If it's an acid then your best choice would be to absorb the liquid with a base, such as baking soda. If you're in a lab then you should have available a "spill kit" designed for cleaning up specific substances.

Use litmus paper to confirm that the liquid is an acid. If it is an acid you need to neutralize the acid by mixing it with a weak base to get a neutral PH. Once a neutral PH is obtained using gloves wipe up the solution.

Dilute with water and then mop it up. Don't try to neutralize it, it will make for a nasty reaction on the floor. Just dilute it with lots of water.

I would first dilute it with plenty of water and attempt to "wash" it away. If that wasn't possible I would "mop" it up and then throw away the mop!
