Because in the US nearly every family has at least one car. We have factories, chemical plants, paper mills, and tons of other industries that release some level of pollution in the manufacturing process.
Our standard of living is vastly superior to that in India and as a result we consume more, use more electricity and gas and that has an adverse effect on the moving of goods by truck or train which also produce a lot of pollution.
China and South America are where we should be looking at pollution control. Many of these 3rd world countries that are emerging as industrialized nations will do so at the expense of the environment. They would rather advance economically and get away from their poor status, even if it means uncontrollable pollution.

all the answers above are completely relevant... but there is definately a concern that is not being addressed. the fact that so many in India are at poverty level, it would naturally be fair to assume we all want their country to develop into one with better standards and opportunity for the people. which brings up the following: If India is to develop at the rate it is developing, there are going to be huge negative environmental impacts. pollution, definately, is going to be on the list. So in order to preserve the environment and cut back on pollution, then solutions must be created in order to allow for their economy to grow without hurting the environment at the huge predicted . How does a country catch up to other industrialized nations without hurting the environment? How can that country afford to invest in industries with technologies that are more advanced and less threatening to the world??
just thought I'd put the idea out there

I don't know if either of your premises are correct. Bophal for example the worst industrial accident in the history of man happened in India. Now that's pollution.
As for overpopulated I'm not sure about that. There are more chinese than Indians. Who gets to say what the population limit is. That person should be able to point out the people that shouldn't be there, what do you want to do with the "extra" people.
People are a resource, as they understand in China, the US, Hong Kong, Japan and many prosperous countries.

It is disappointing to find that more than half of U.S. streams are polluted. And the worst conditions are found in the eastern third of the country, a study by the Environmental Protection Agency reveals.
This gloomy finding is the agency’s first-ever study of shallow or “wadeable” streams. According to the agency, 42% were in poor condition, with another 25% considered as fair. It is only 28% that were in good condition leaving out another five percent, which were not analyzed because of problems of sampling in New England.
It is farming and logging that led to rise in the levels of nitrogen and phosphorous in the water, according to the survey. These chemicals ultimate kill aquatic life, as the increase in plants and algae growth caused by it gobbles up the oxygen in the water

Because we use more material goods per capita, and a great deal more energy per capita than the people of India. Producing the material goods and the energy used in one American lifestyle is much more polluting than producing the material goods and energy for one, or, in truth many Indians, most of whom have neither cars nor electric appliances, and who live in very small living quarters. This doesn't mean the Indians are all poor or technologically illiterate, only that they really don't have or use as much "stuff" as we do.

You answered your question yourself! India is underdeveloped and the USA is not. Every car we drive pollutes the air, electric, Semi trucks, etc. If India is underdeveloped they don't have the resources that the USA has to pollute.

India isn't undeveloped. It's develop-ing. It's taking longer than it is with China because their FDI limit is 1/10th China's.

It's got something to do with the cars. We Americans love cars with big engines e.g the V8 cars. Cars with big engines cause more polllution esp. since the average American usually has 2 or more cars, you can imagine how many vehicles we have on the road and how much pollution we cause.
