As a general rule of thumb, you should favor nylons with a higher percentage of Lycra/spandex (in the legs - some will have a different percentage for the panty and the legs, but the panty doesn't usually run) than those with a lower percentage.

Best ones I have ever found were at JCPenny. They cost a little more, but boy what a difference! They usually last me about six months before they get a run. I Can't remember the brand name. Sorry, but I'm sure the salesladies there could recommend some. The ones I got were about $7.

Tights. You can also use finger nail polish to stop the run. Put it at the top and bottom of the run. It should help until you get home.
